Angelina Jolie’s Appearance Sparks Wild ‘Body Double’ Theories

Angelina Jolie’s appearance sparked wild conspiracy theories that the screen icon has been replaced by a clone.

The bizarre rumors began after photos and videos of the 50-year-old Oscar winner attending a Tom Ford event in Shanghai, China, circulated online. Upon seeing the images, some people speculated that the actress had been replaced by a body double.

Jolie attended the March 29 event wearing a white silky wrap dress. Her light brown hair was in a deep side part, the front pieces covering one eye. She wore her usual cat-eye eyeliner with a subtle brow but made one bold beauty move: a bright-red lipstick—not exactly a leap from her usual look.

While the Mr. and Mrs. Smith actress always stuns on the red carpet, this time, people said she was unrecognizable—so much so, in fact, that one person called her a “fake or an impersonator” in the comment section of a TikTok video documenting the event.

Another commenter said it was “so obvious” that instead of Jolie, the woman pictured was her body double.

“She is not Angelina…she is someone else,“ a third commenter wrote, adding, ”They did her too, like they did Jim Carrey.“

In February, Carrey was the subject of clone conspiracies after fans thought he appeared similarly unrecognizable while attending the César Awards in France.

Not all commenters jumped to quite as extreme a conclusion; some spectators theorized that Jolie had simply undergone cosmetic enhancements—presumably a more frequent occurrence in Hollywood than body doubles.

Among the guesses were Botox and lip filler gone wrong.

“Every injector’s worst nightmare is giving Angelina Jolie a lid droop,” one cosmetic dermatologist wrote on Instagram, speculating that the side bangs were covering a misshapen eyelid from an injectable gone wrong.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Gary Motykie joined the conversation on Instagram, noting that he did not observe any drastic surgical change in Jolie’s appearance. Instead, he suggested that the event’s lighting might have played a role in her supposedly unrecognizable appearance.

Poor lighting can make the skin look less radiant and highlight under-eye bags and wrinkles, as seen at the Vanity Fair Oscars party.

This is a more plausible reason for Jolie’s appearance, particularly since she looked significantly brighter and more rested in Instagram photos posted by Tom Ford, taken with a flash.

Dr. Motykie also explained that changes in appearance are natural with age.

“The eye area is one of the first places we lose volume as we age, which can create that more hollow or ‘tired’ look,“ he wrote in the comments, adding, ”That can be enhanced by lighting or makeup—but it’s a very common, natural change."

Many others came to Jolie’s defense, too, writing that there was nothing wrong with the way Jolie looked.

“The makeup is different. That’s all,” one person wrote, and another added, “It’s just aging. It happens to the best of us.”
