Emmy-nominated actress Chrissy Metz got on a popular GLP-1 weight loss drug and lost over 60 pounds.

“I had to do what I felt is best for me,” Metz, 45, told E! News in an interview published August 10.

Metz had been skeptical of GLP-1s ever since they became a bigger part of the national conversation around weight loss during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But then, the This Is Us alum’s perspective began to change as she watched her father experience health complications related to obesity.

Now, Metz has partnered with Ro, a telehealth company that connects patients with US-licensed professionals for treatments like weight loss, sexual health, and hair loss.

She is one of many celebrities to promote GLP-1s with Ro, including tennis legend Serena Williams and former basketball star Charles Barkley.

Although Metz initially worried about what taking the medication would do to her body, her concerns were eased by a friend who was “very thorough in his explanation” of how the appetite-suppressing jabs worked.

“I’ve been on diets for a very, very long time, since I was a kid, and I know I can lose weight, but I didn’t know I could quiet food noise. I didn’t know there were other factors,” Metz said.

According to Ro’s website, Metz has lost 63 pounds since beginning treatment.

For Metz, the effects have extended beyond the number on the scale.

“I can run around a stage eight shows a week on Broadway as a 45-year-old perimenopausal woman,” she told TODAY on August 10. “It’s helped with inflammation, it’s helped with energy, and just overall health, which is so nice.”

Metz is currently starring as Angélique in the jukebox musical & Juliet at London’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre through September 13.

In addition to taking the medicine, Metz also told People she is working on building more muscle with a trainer without an ideal weight in mind.

“I just want to feel strong and not have my morning ruined because I stepped on a scale and I’m several pounds above what I think I should be,” she said.

Metz’s comments come as celebrities continue to face intense scrutiny over dramatic weight loss, with the public often assuming that changes are the result of GLP-1 medication or disordered eating.

But the actress is making clear that her decision was rooted in her own health, not pressure to conform to a particular body type.

“There’s so much shame around being in a bigger body,” she said. “So, just knowing that I wasn’t doing it purely for vanity’s sake, or because people are pressuring me, it was really like, ‘How can I be the healthiest for the longest? How can I really make it a priority for my future and what I want my life to look like?’”

The actress has not publicly detailed any negative side effects from her medication.

GLP-1 drugs can cause side effects, including nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

In This Is Us, Metz’s character, Kate Pearson, frequently confronted the shame that came with living in a larger body—including in one memorable audition scene where she pushed back against the idea that a thinner actress should get a role simply because she was a “size 2.”

Now, Metz is confronting a different kind of scrutiny: the inevitable opinions that come with publicly acknowledging that she uses a GLP-1.

“I know people are going to have opinions because they have opinions about anything I do. It’s always centered around my weight, which is even more bizarre,” she told E!

But Metz says she’s no longer interested in making health decisions based on other people’s expectations of her body.

“I think it’s so important to put yourself first,” she told TODAY. “As we age, sometimes we have health issues that we’re concerned about or want to get ahead of, and that was certainly my case. I have to do what’s right for me. I’ve lived my life a lot for other people over myself.”
